My process

My process is straightforward.

After you've read through the information on this page, the first step is for you to send me an email expressing your interest in working with me.

I'll send you a short questionnaire to find out what you’re looking for in the collage (subject matter, size, etc). We schedule a call to talk through the variables. If you’re interested in proceeding, we develop a timeline including payment and delivery dates. The initial consultation fee of $50 is due at this time. If you decide not to move forward, or want to think about the idea further, the conversation ends there and you don't owe me anything until you decide to start the process moving again.

After I receive your initial payment, I start gathering images. If you have materials you would like me to incorporate, you send these to me. For the images I collect, I either scan and email them to you for approval or you can make an appointment to drop by my studio to see them. Once we’ve figured out the main images, it’s time for me to start creating your collage. A payment of half the cost of the artwork is due at this time. I disappear into my studio and create the finished piece.

Once I receive the final payment from you, I ship you the artwork or you can come by my studio to pick it up!

Materials

I use original materials in my collages and gravitate towards images from the early to mid 1900s. If I'm using some of your images, we can talk about whether to use the originals or copies.

I use non-toxic, water-based glue to stick everything onto acid-free watercolour paper.* I use only professional grade acrylic paints and waterproof inks. Because I love the texture of the old papers, I do not put any sealant or varnish on the finished product. Even if you purchase an unframed piece, you'll likely want to put it under glass to protect it from dust and other wear and tear.

*It's important to remember that most of the materials I use in my collages are originals not printed on acid-free or archival paper. They will likely age or yellow over time. To conserve the work, keep it out of direct sunlight and away from moisture.

If you would like the work to be sent somewhere outside of Vancouver BC (Canada), shipping and handling are extra, based on either airmail or ground rates. Options can be determined in advance if you tell me the size of work, framed or unframed, and where it will be shipped to.
