| Workshops
for Artists
These workshops are designed to support artists who want to focus on the business side of their art careers. Are you ready to prepare effective marketing materials? Find ways to write about your art practice and connect with fans and collectors? If so, these courses are for you! Workshops will be held in a supportive environment at Robis studio in east Vancouver. Scroll down for details. To register (or if you have any questions), contact Robi by email or by phone at (604) 928-4284. Workshops: Writing the Basics Whether you're self-taught or university educated, going it alone or represented by a gallery, every artist needs to write and create some basic materials: a CV, bio, and artist statement. Knowing you need to produce these and actually sitting down and doing it (or updating your old ones) are two different things. Over the course of 3 two-hour sessions, well look at examples of other artists materials and support each other in creating or updating our own. 3 sessions (6 hours
class time): $ 60 Register by email or phone (604) 928-4284 Writing About Your Work: Beyond the Basics This course will look at how to write about your work, whether its your work as a whole, a particular body of work, work in progress, or a single piece in context of your art practice. We will explore questions about what and why you create, what inspires and motivates you, how you work, and how you want others to relate to your art. We'll then look at different types of writing that you might engage in and what these forms require (from artist statements, to your website, blogging, Facebook, e-newsletters, and other promotions and marketing materials). We will focus on speaking from the heart in a way that people without an art background can understand, while still conveying your ideas and art practice in a meaningful way. Because this writing is destined to be shared with others, we will be sharing our writings with each other in a safe and supportive environment. Feedback will also be shared in this spirit. The workshop is divided into two parts. In Part 1, we'll explore the question of audience (who are you trying to reach with your work?), discuss the importance and nuance of language (tone, jargon, storytelling, authenticity), look at different types of art writing, including examples from other artists, and reflect and talk about your own work and what you would like to convey to your audience(s). Part 2 will focus on your own work and writing. Each class will include reflection, discussion, and writing excercises, as well as take home assignments to further your thinking and writing. You'll be invited to share your art and writing with the other workshop participants for feedback in a supportive environment (sharing is always optional). Part 1: 3 sessions
